Klein Arts Center

The Elizabeth Gatchell Klein Arts Center provides inspiration for young artists and fosters their confidence in the visual arts, theater, and dance.

Built in 2001, the Klein Arts Center houses the School’s Ceramics, Photography, Studio Art, and Theatrical programs and is home to theatrical performances, campus gatherings, and student art exhibits throughout the school year. Its facilities include an expansive art studio, a state-of-the-art photography studio and darkroom, and the Ruth Milliken Murphy ’30 Ceramics Studio, as well as classrooms and faculty offices, including the Christian Humann Studio Art Office.

The complex is also home to the Woods Theater, a large theater space with a balcony, sound and lighting booth, lighting grid, and flexible seating and floor plans that can accommodate 200 people for staged performances. The space also hosts many formal and informal functions for the School and for community groups.

Additionally, the Klein’s naturally lit atrium and entry hall frequently feature student art exhibits and gatherings, such as campus receptions and talks by visiting speakers. The Laura H. Harris ’74 Drama Wing includes dressing rooms and storage space for costumes, props, and scenery and a workshop for building theatrical props and creating three-dimensional art.

The Klein Center is named for beloved MHS Teacher and Art Department Chair Elizabeth Gatchell Klein, who taught at the School from 1938 until 1976. After her retirement, she continued her service to the School in many ways, including serving on the Board of Trustees from 1977 until 1987, when she was elected Honorary Trustee for life. At the School’s Centennial Celebration in 1998, Mrs. Klein was awarded the School’s first-ever Distinguished Faculty Member Award.

Mrs. Klein died in February 2006, but her presence resonates still, in the memories of generations of MHS Alumnae, in lives well lived, and in the Klein Center, a gift in her honor from scores of her devoted students. A frieze in the building’s main entry hall reads, “Teacher, role model, friend: You taught us to love learning. Your passion for art, keen intellect, and commitment to your students changed our lives forever.”
