Advocacy: MHS 2017-2018 School Year Theme

Every Spring, the Miss Hall's community votes on a theme for the upcoming school year. For 2017-2018, students, faculty and staff voted on the theme of "Advocacy." The theme helps guide student life, academic, and Horizons programming throughout the year.  Students have been participating in a variety of on-campus programming, including discussion of the "All School Read" - Rad Women Worldwide - and viewing four films.
The entire school community - students, faculty and staff - read Rad Women Worldwide during the summer of 2017. The book is described on the Rad Women website:

"Rad Women Worldwide tells 40 stories of women all over the world who have persevered and fought for equality —from well-known leaders like Malala and Wangari Maathai to lesser-known heroes like Chinese feminist Qiu Jin, Japanese mountain climber Junko Tabei, and Nazi resistor Sophie Scholl.

From ancient heroes like the Sumerian poet Enheduanna all the way up to contemporary figures like Colombian grafitti artist Bastardilla, the book spans centuries and continents to remind readers of the breadth and depth of women’s lives and achievements."
"Chasing Ice" depicts a heroic photojournalist doing everything in his power to deliver hope to our carbon-powered planet.
In a time when society is beginning to see more transgendered youths, "Tomboy" fits into a canon of films that illustrate the need for understanding and acceptance.
"Girl Rising" is an innovative film about the power of education to change a girl - and the world.
"Miss Representation" exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.
“Find a need you can fill today, one that is within your power, and do it. As you contemplate the options before you — tomorrow, next year, and ten years from now — remember that there often is no right answer, so don’t be paralyzed trying to figure it out.”Commencement Speaker Christina Lowery, CEO of Girl Rising
