Energetic Performances in Centennial Hall

With Centennial Hall sporting a nightclub atmosphere, MHS jazz and rock musicians entertained the MHS community on Friday night with an energetic evening of music. The year’s first Jazz and Rock Night Concert featured several students displaying their talents in performances that provided a nice prelude to the Winter Break.
The evening opened with the Ukulele Band playing “Ocean Eyes,” by Billie Eilish. The group featured Liz Cachat ’19, Emily Carmel ’20, Renatta Faz ’22, Katarina Petrovic ’20, and Ginny Zhang ’20, on ukulele, Emma Kotelnicki ’20 on u-bass, Isabelle LaPierre ’20 on the cajón and Instrumental Music Instructor Rob Sanzone on mandolin. The band K.R.E.S. — Kate Nguyen ’20 on bass and vocals; Riagain Wiley ’20 on piano, cajón, and vocals; Emily Carmel ’20 on guitar and vocals; and Soleil Laurin ’20 on ukulele and vocals — then took to the stage to perform “Riptide,” by Vance Joy.
Ivy Wang ’19 followed with two songs. Ivy, on guitar and vocals was joined by Betty Xiao ’20 on drums and Mr. Sanzone on bass for “idontwannabeyouanymore,” by Billie Eilish, and then she performed a solo version of her own composition, “I Know that the Sun Will Still Rise Tomorrow,” singing and playing the piano. Ivy was followed by the Trig Band — so named because the members all take the same math class — which performed “Demons,” by Imagine Dragons. The group featured Kate Nguyen ’20 on bass and vocals; Brooke Chen ’19 on guitar; Nancy Gao ’20 on piano and vocals; and Jingtong Zhang ’20 on drums.
Bethany Song ’20 and Keer Liu ’19 sang the Chinese pop tune “Walking in the Cold,” by Sihan Liu, to a piano accompaniment by Director of Music Debbie Duff, and vocalist/guitarist Ayla Wallace ’20 followed by performing her own composition, “Rocket Man.” After vocalist Ingrid O’Dell ’19 sang “Lullaby of Birdland,” to an accompaniment by Ms. Duff on piano and Mr. Sanzone on Drums, the group Icarus and the Weezies took the stage to perform “Beverly Hills,” by Weezer. The group featured Nikky Abreu ’19 on bass; Rose Battista ’19 on drums; Ingrid O’Dell ’19 and Sophie Shea ’19 on vocals; and Ainsley Schuth ’19 on guitar.
The MHS Jazz Band closed the evening with a peppy rendition of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” The group features Kathryn Barrett ’22, Natasha Hagan ’21, and Nya Mielke ’21 on alto sax; Rose Battista ’19 and Randi McGeary ’22 on clarinet; Jasmine Briggs ’19 on percussion; Bella D’Aniello ’22 on trumpet; Trudy Fadding ’19 on bass; Oona Kirveslahti ’20 on drums; and Ayla Wallace ’20 and Ivy Wang ’19 on drums.
A great time was had by all!
