Miss Hall’s students Trudy Fadding ’19 and Riagain Wiley ’20 have been selected for the 2018 Massachusetts Music Educators Association’s (MMEA) Western District Festival Concert to be held in January.
Trudy will play cello with the festival’s District Orchestra, while Riagain, a soprano, has been selected to sing with the District Chorus. Both students auditioned in November for the prestigious festival, and this will be Trudy’s second appearance with the orchestra.
The Festival Concert will be held at 3 p.m., on Saturday, January 13 (snow date of Sunday, January 14), at the Fine Arts Center of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Tickets may be purchased at the door, but for advanced ticket sales, please contact the MHS Music Department.
The MMEA, which is the state division of the National Association for Music Education (formerly the Music Educators National Conference), sponsors annual District and State Music Festivals that are open to all secondary school musicians in both public and private schools. Miss Hall’s students have participated in the Festival Concert for more than thirty years.
To be chosen for the festival, performers audition at Westfield State University in early November. Instrumentalists prepare a required solo piece, and singers prepare and sing a vocal part of a required choral piece. All musicians must also play scales and sight-read a short piece that they have never seen before, to determine their music reading skills. The selected students will rehearse together twice at UMass and perform a concert after the second day of rehearsal.
Congratulations, MHS performers, and to the Expressive Arts Department.
