JAZZ & ROCK NIGHT

Student Musicians Showcase Talent

MHS musicians showcased their many talents at the latest edition of Jazz and Rock Night, which proved the perfect way to wrap up a busy week back after Thanksgiving Break.

The MHS Ukulele Band — Liz Cachat ’19, Emily Carmel ’20, Emma Kotelnicki ’20, Isabelle Lapierre ’20, Soleil Laurin ’20, Lyn Liu ’20, Ayla Wallace ’20, and Ginny Zhang ’20 — opened the evening in Centennial Hall with two songs, Photograph, by Ed Sheeran, and What a Pity, by Right Away, Great Captain! They were followed by the duet of vocalist Bethany Song ’20 and guitarist Ivy Wang ’19, who performed Five Hundred Miles, by Hedy West.

Anna Kim ’18 offered the evening’s first solo performance, singing People Help the People, by Birdy, to an accompaniment from Director of Music Debbie Duff on piano. The Electric Berries — Anna, on vocals and keyboards, Tiffany Luu ’18 on vocal and guitar, Kate Nguyen ’20 on bass and vocals, Queen Tran ’18 on vocals and shaker, and Amy Qian ’18 on drums — followed with a rousing rendition of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.

The duo of keyboardist Bella Currie ’18 and guitarist Rose Battista ’19 followed with Chasing Cars, by Snow Patrol, and vocalist Ingrid O’Dell ’19 sang the popular jazz standard My Funny Valentine to an accompaniment from Ms. Duff. The group Moody Vine — Trudy Fadding ’19 on vocals and bass, Judy Li ’18 on drums, and Ivy on guitar — then followed with Under the Bridge, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Just Jazz Band closed the evening with two songs, Blue Monk, by Thelonious Monk, and Take 5, by Dave Brubeck. The popular MHS group features Rose on clarinet, Bella on alto saxophone, Trudy on bass, Judy on drums, Ivy on guitar, Amanda Xu ’19 on piano, and Andrea Zhang ’18 on vocals.
