    Freshwomen hosted the traditional May Day celebration on May 7 in the Quad. Ninth-graders danced around the May Pole, presented flowers to members of the Class of 2018, and distributed carnations to the juniors as rising seniors. Maya Creamer ’20 was also introduced as this year’s May Queen.

  • Gala of the Arts - 5.4.18

    The Horizons Arts Council (an on-campus Horizons site) hosted the annual Gala of the Arts (GOTA) on Friday, May 4. This year’s event, “A Night at the Oscars,” showcased the work of student videographers on campus. After entering the Woods Theater via the red carpet — complete with photo booths and performance art! — 17 short films were screened and awards distributed by a panel of faculty judges.

  • Ninth Grade Power of Poetry - 5.3.18

    For the new Power of Poetry project, ninth grade students chose a topic for which they wanted to advocate, researched the topic, chose a poem that spoke to the topic, then wrote their own original poems.

    For the senior Horizons presentations, 12th grade students offered a trade show in Centennial Hall, with students reporting on their senior projects and showcasing work done at their sites through a variety of media.

  • Poetry Recitation - 4.30.18

    The English Department hosted its annual Poetry Recitation Contest on April 30 in Centennial Hall. Eighteen students recited poems in a schoolwide competition. Congratulations to Mariah Lewis ’18, Ingrid O’Dell ’19, Rea Rice ’20, and Chelsea Canal ’21, who won the grade-level competitions, and to Julie Xu ’18, who won the evening’s overall competition with her recitation of “My Chinese,” by Athena Chu.

    Classical Music Night featured solo and group vocal and instrumental performances, as well as the popular combination of the MHS Chamber Choir and Instrumental Ensemble.

    For the first MHS STEAM Day, students heard from two young entrepreneurs, alumna Lexi Sprague ’13, who has launched three startups, and Judy Zhu, founder of edtech startup Walla. The afternoon included design thinking, with some students tackling ways to create better backpacks and lockers and others working in teams to build towers.

  • Shakespeare and Company perform "Othello" - 3.28.18

    The MHS community was treated to a live performance of Shakespeare’s "Othello" by members of nearby Shakespeare & Company’s Northeast Regional Tour. After the performance, the actors engaged in a conversation with the students, discussing several themes related to the play. Freshwomen also participated in a performance workshop with the actors in the Woods Theater.

    Eight students competed in the Northeast Science Bowl at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut. MHS sent two quiz teams, one captained by Tram Nguyen ’18 and the other captained by Christy Liang ’19. Congratulations to Tram, Christy, Olivia Cheng ’20, Mere Hall ’20, Vivian Hou ’18, Rachel Li ’19, Monica Mo ’18, and Marisa Powell ’19, who left at 5 a.m.(!) to make the competition.
