Horizons

Ninth Grade Horizons

Serving Self and Others

Every student in their first year is new to the School - and to each other, so ninth-grade Horizons emphasizes team building, ethics, health and wellness, and public speaking. Through discussions, workshops, interdisciplinary learning, and projects such as Arty-Party and the Greenhouse Business Project, we develop voice, vision, interpersonal skills, and gumption - all traits of a Miss Hall’s student.

  • Arty-Party

Students start with product ideas - necklaces, terrariums, art, and more - and develop a business around them. They work together to make the items, develop sales plans, calculate costs, and then sell the finished products to the Berkshire community. Students then decide where to donate the profits. Students learn business skills, teamwork, and philanthropy - learning has never been so fun.

  • Greenhouse Business Project

The Greenhouse Business Project teaches girls to propagate and nurture plants to be sold in original, handmade pottery. Profits go to the class fund and the Annual Fund for MHS. The girls also grow vegetable starts donated to community gardens throughout the Berkshires. As a result, they learn business operations, practice philanthropy, and explore the structure of nonprofits.

  • Interdisciplinary Learning

Led by “Team 9” faculty and staff, students participate in experiential days and long-term projects, such as the Power of Poetry Project (a.k.a. POP!), that help them make connections, use their voice, and explore academics across disciplines.
"The Horizons program was something that certainly stood out for me as a prospective student. As someone who is interested in giving back to my community, I was looking for a place to start, and Horizons seemed like a perfect place." - 9th Grade Student
