Exceptional Performances by Student Musicians and Vocalists

Centennial Hall on Tuesday offered a respite from a busy semester, with student musicians and vocalists entertaining on Classical Music Night. In all, nearly twenty students displayed their talents in ensemble and solo performances of pieces by Bach, Chopin, Mozart, Vivaldi, and others.
The program opened with the Miss Hall’s Chamber Ensemble —violinists Maggie Bullock ’22, Calla Gong ’21, Ria Kedia ’20, Faia Kronick ’19, Soleil Laurin ’20, and Celcie Tetteh ’21, and pianist Wendy Wang ’20 —performing the “Flower Duet,” from the opera Lakme, by Léo Delibes, and “Theme,” from Game of Thrones, by R. Djawadi. The ensemble was directed by MHS Violin Instructor Bing Liu.
Soleil remained on stage and was joined by pianist Melody Cai ’20 to perform “Largo,” from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, and pianist Ivy Zhou ’22 followed by performing the anonymously penned Old French Gavotte and Minuet. After pianist Dorit Wang ’21 performed J.S. Bach’s Little Prelude in D Minor, Jiho Shin ’21 offered the evening’s first vocal performance, singing “I Attempt from Love’s Sickness to Fly,” from Purcell’s The Indian Queen, to a piano accompaniment by MHS Director of Music Debbie Duff.
After pianist Chloe Do ’20 performed the “Allegretto” from Sonatina No. 2 by Muzio Clementi, Faia, on violin, and Melody, on piano, returned to perform Those Were the Days, by Boris Fomin, with Ms. Liu on violin. An ensemble featuring Calla and Celcie, on violin I, Maggie and Soleil on violin III, Wendy on piano, and Ms. Liu on violin ii then performed “Theme” from Polovtsian Dances, by Alexander Borodin, and the traditional piece, Come Follow.
Vocalists Riagain Wiley ’20 and Ingrid O’Dell ’19 followed, singing “Abends will ich schlafen gehn,” from Hansel and Gretel, by Engelbert Humperdinck, to an accompaniment from Ms. Duff. Pianist Jenna Guo ’22 then performed “Minuet,” from Maurice Ravel’s Sonatine. After pianist Catherine Zhang ’19 performed Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 23, the MHS Piano Quartet of Ria, on violin I, Catherine, on piano, cellist Trudy Fadding ’19, and Ms. Liu on violin II, closed the evening by performing Concerto No. 1 in D Major KV107, by Mozart.
The evening showcased the diverse talents of MHS students and also offered and well-deserved respite leading into exams.
Well done, MHS musicians and vocalists!
