The Horizons Program

For more than twenty years, the Freshwoman Plant Sale, as part of the School’s nationally acclaimed Horizons Program, has encouraged collaboration and entrepreneurism among Miss Hall’s students. The students work together to develop skills and a sound work ethic that will benefit their future endeavors. Those skills include financial planning, business management, and basic horticulture, all learned while doing hands-on work. One team of freshwomen works in the School’s greenhouse, while another team works in the Ruth Milliken Murphy ’30 Ceramics Studio to produce clay pots sold with many of the plants.
Now in its twenty-fourth year, Horizons takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. each Thursday during the academic year. While freshwomen work on the MHS campus, sophomores and juniors volunteer at off-campus locations, and seniors participate in off-campus internships, exploring college major and career possibilities. Through the program, MHS students contribute about 12,000 volunteer hours annually to the local Berkshire region.
