Updates from our Athletic Director

April 23, 2019,

Despite the past Saturday washout, it was a busy and successful week for our Spring Sports teams.

On Tuesday, our JV Lacrosse program played a "friendly" with Pine Cobble. Many of our students got to see old friends and familiar faces as they entered the competition. In a well-played game, our Hurricanes were able to secure a victory to kick off the week. Equally as important, our Hurricanes made a great impression on the visiting Pine Cobble team, by playing with class and being good sports, and hopefully, that will result in a few more students making the transition from Pine Cobble to MHS. Congrats JV Lax!

Wednesday saw a number of games as well...

Varsity Lacrosse hosted Hoosac school in a physical matchup. Our Hurricanes were up to the test as they used their speed, agility, and high level of skill to race out to an early lead. Despite some hard hitting from the Hoosac team, our Varsity Lacrosse players were able to secure a lead and a victory.

Softball hosted IMS and won in DRAMATIC fashion. In a matchup that has been, in recent history, been one-sided in favor of IMS, our Softball players rose to the challenge one put a W in the win column. Behind some timely hitting, solid pitching, and some slick fielding, our Hurricanes found themselves in a position to win the game in the bottom of the last inning. Big shoutout to Gabby Nicholson who drove in the winning, WALK OFF, run in the bottom half of the inning to ensure a home victory for our Hurricanes.

Tennis took the long ride to Canterbury to take on the Saints. While a closely contested matchup, our Tennis team came up a bit short. While they continue to grow as a team and as individual tennis players, they are still on the hunt for that elusive first team win of the season. We know that W is just around the corner!

On Friday, our Softball team was back in action against Forman. In a game where the Softball team was looking to get some revenge from an early season, 1 run loss at Forman, our Hurricanes were hoping that would happen on our home turf. In a very tight game throughout all 7 innings, our Hurricanes just didn't have enough late-game magic as their 7th inning rally fell a run short.

The rest of the weekend was a washout as the Berkshire's saw a lot of rain on Saturday.

Our teams were back in action yesterday and we will have more info on those games next week.

April 15, 2019

We are two full weeks into a busy Spring Season and despite lots of rain, things have gone swimmingly.

The lacrosse program has been hit the ground running this season with huge wins over Storm King (18 - 4) and Class "A" Marianapolis (6-2) as well as going a total of 5-1 versus some of Berkshire County's best teams. JV Lacrosse has had a slower entry into the season, logging one game to date, a tightly contested matchup vs. Ethel Walker that saw Hurricanes come up just a bit short. The sky is the limit for this program as they continue to work together, play hard, and develop as a team and program.

The softball program has seen great improvements from last year. From the number of participants to the number of runs scored, and innings played, our Softball team has become a serious contender this spring. They opened the season with a very tight matchup vs. Forman, coming up 1 run shy of a victory. They followed that up with a broken down bus, a lot of laughs, and a competitive game versus Gunnery that saw the Hurricanes play their closest contest in years vs. The Gunn school. This Saturday was a HUGE day for our Softball program as they traveled over the mountain and secured their first victory of the year vs. Darrow (18-5!!). They are back in action a bunch this week, so please try to check them out when you get a chance.

Our tennis program has been hard at work, playing a very tough schedule vs. some of the best programs in New England. They opened up with a tight matchup vs. Ethel Walker, coming up a bit shy of the victory. They followed up that with a very difficult matchup against Suffield Academy. The Tigers had a little more in the tank that day as the outlasted our Hurricanes in their second match up the season. Last week the Tennis team hit the road to Gunnery and Vermont Academy. Both matchups were contested and resulted in two losses, however, you can see our tennis team growing and developing and know that a win is right around the corner.

Given the weather in New England, golf has yet to see any competitive action but has been able to FINALLY get out and play a little bit. Though small in numbers they make up for it with their focus and determination and we anticipate an awesome spring. I wish this team well as they head to Westover for their first match of this season this weekend.
