Coding @ Miss Hall's

A two-week summer program for middle school girls, July 15 - 26, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm.

Led by Dr. Christopher Himes, Director of Engineering & Technology Innovation.

Learn how to:
  • Build computer controllers and circuits
  • Plan, design, and create their own programs
  • Coding principles through gameplay
  • Experience the beautiful Miss Hall's campus in summer
  • Connect coding to their interests
  • Build bravery and confidence
  • About careers in STEM fields

Eligibility: 
  • For girls entering grades 6, 7, or 8 in Fall 2019
  • No prior experience is needed. This program offers a beginner and intermediate computer coding experience
  • Ability to commit to the full program
  • Enrollment, $1,000 for the two-week program,  is based on rolling admission. SPACE IS LIMITED

What Will You Do?


Learn to code or gain more experience using Scratch, an online block coding system developed by researchers at MIT: 
  • animate the cat named Scratch!
  • plan, design, and create your own programs
  • make interactive programs that respond to the user
  • learn by playing games and developing videos

Learn to build physical computer controllers and other circuits with Makey Makey, an electronic hardware system that fosters creativity in electronics. Students will:
  • build computing devices that interact with your code
  • build independent electronic circuits that you control with code.
  • create controllers out of anything. Who doesn't need a banana keyboard? Check out the video.

Learn coding principles through physical game play:
  • we will play active games and apply concepts of coding
  • game play and game design to emphasize computer logic

About Dr. Himes


Christopher Himes, Ph.D.
, joined MHS in Fall 2016 as the Director of Engineering & Technology Innovation/STEAM Coordinator, overseeing the new Department of Engineering and Technology Innovation and directing STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) initiatives.

Dr. Himes comes to MHS from the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams, Massachusetts, where he was an Assistant Professor, the Jorge Endowed Chair of Education, and STEM Program Manager.

A teacher for more than fifteen years, Dr. Himes holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of Massachusetts Boston, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington.
