MHS has formally launched its Go Far, Go Together Campaign, which seeks to raise $50 million to support the MHS academic program, build the School’s endowment, and fund construction of new science and academic facilities.

The Campaign, the most ambitious fundraising effort in the School’s 111-year history, officially kicked off Saturday, October 17, with a daylong symposium and evening celebration featuring some of the nation’s top experts on issues affecting women and girls (read more).

The Campaign will raise $30 million for the School’s endowment and program support; $12 million for facilities and campus improvements; and $8 million for The Fund for MHS, the School’s annual fundraising initiative. Capital projects incorporated into the School’s Master Plan, which will be funded through the Campaign, include expanding academic facilities, particularly those for science, and renovating faculty housing.

Overall, more than $25 million has been raised to date during the Go Far, Go Together Campaign’s “silent” phase. The campaign is expected to close in 2013. Its theme comes from the African proverb, “If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.” The School’s most recent campaign—the $23 million Centennial Campaign—closed in June 2004 at $25.5 million and funded more than $14 million in capital improvements—including a new arts center, library, and athletic center—on the MHS campus.

Securing the Future, Fulfilling the Mission, and Sustaining Excellence

Securing the Future

Endowment, Program Support & Debt Reduction—$30 million

  • Build the endowment as a permanent revenue stream for those portions of the program that now rely on fundraising
  • Support programs until a sufficient endowment is in place
  • Retire a significant portion of the School’s current outstanding debt

Fulfilling the Mission

Facilities and Campus Improvements—$12 million

  • Add and enlarge science spaces to meet the increased demand for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education
  • Renovate and expand classrooms to accommodate increased enrollment
  • Continue capital improvements and address deferred maintenance in the Main Building
  • Improve faculty housing to attract and retain high-quality teachers

Sustaining Excellence

The Fund for MHS—$8 million

  • Provide ongoing program support
  • Sustain innovative programs that meet the needs of girls
Proposed Expansion of the Schoolhouse Wing

Renovation and expansion of the Schoolhouse Wing will increase and enhance the spaces available for the academic program, most specifically for science. Four new science classrooms (two on each floor) and accompanying laboratory space will be added through the 10,000-square-foot expansion of the building’s first and second floors. The project will increase the overall number of classrooms by 20 percent.

The old science classrooms will be reclaimed for new classroom and/or office space,
and other existing classroom space will be enlarged and renovated. The project also
will be accessible to those with disabilities and will address deferred maintenance in
the Schoolhouse Wing.
