Horizons Program

Horizons is our experiential, off-campus learning program. Part of the academic program, Horizons gives Miss Hall’s students opportunities to volunteer and intern each week at social service and cultural organizations, businesses, and professional offices.

It’s where students work with adult role models, learn to meet real-world expectations, and discover what it takes to make a real difference—in the workplace and in the world. Along the way, they explore areas of possible college majors and career interests and pitch in to make their community a better place. The sky’s the limit.

Core Values
Students thrive in Horizons through...
  • Experiential Learning: The Horizons Program is committed to offering girls meaningful learning opportunities in real-world settings that positively impact their knowledge, skills, and outlook.
  • Service: Serving their community in purposeful and valued ways teaches girls to become partners and problem solvers with those they serve. This kind of hands-on experience is an important life lesson in what it means to be an active, compassionate, and contributing member of society.
  • Reflection: Through careful consideration of her work on site, each student regularly reflects on her educational, social, and personal goals allowing for self-assessment. Reflection helps a student generate new goals, learn from her mistakes, and increase her decision-making ability.
  • Exploration and Discovery: Horizons provides opportunities for students to explore interests and to discover personal talents and strengths, all toward the goal of identifying areas of future pursuit.
  • Individualized Growth: Student growth throughout the Horizons experience is highly individualized. Unlike other measures of ability, skills or experience, the outcome of Horizons work is unique to each student. She creates her own success in the ways she approaches the work, sets personal goals, and achieves those goals.
Mission
Through the exploration of purposeful service and work, Horizons challenges students to develop competence and self-worth as they set and achieve individual goals and learn to be active and compassionate members of their community.
The Horizons program at Miss Hall's School takes place each Thursday during the school year from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Why Horizons?
Horizons provides each student with opportunities to participate in work and service for the purpose of:

• Enhancing a sense of competence and worth by doing.
• Refining social, communication, decision-making, and problem-solving skills while contributing to community needs.
• Testing values and defining moral positions in the context of community.
• Encouraging volunteer service as an important part of life.
• Increasing financial literacy.

To reach the objectives of Horizons, each student will:

• Research the goals and organization of service sites and discover why volunteers are needed.
• Serve organizations in the Berkshires that meet community needs.
• Reflect on her experiences through structured journal entries.
• Share perceptions of her service experience with team members.
• Study the role of volunteerism in a democratic society.
• Work with her team to develop and deliver a presentation on her Horizons experience.
• Identify the benefits that the experience provided her, the recipients, the community, and the team.
• Explore the range of financial literacy from personal finance to philanthropy.
• Gain experience for future work and study.
